INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON

  • An endoscopic procedure, without the need for invasive surgery.
  • Performed on an outpatient basis, without requiring hospitalization.
  • The device is temporary, and it is generally removed by endoscopy after a year.
  • Indicated for patients looking to lose between 10 and 20 kilograms.

WHAT IS THE INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON TECHNIQUE?

The intragastric balloon is a non-surgical, endoscopic bariatric technique in which a latex balloon is introduced into the gastric cavity. The intragastric balloon is inflated with a sterile solution of normal saline to which one cubic centimeter of methylene blue has been added. The intragastric balloon has a capacity between 400 and 700 cc, and the volume to which it is inflated depends on the patient’s stomach size.

HOW IS THE INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON PLACED?

Before placing the intragastric balloon, the patient undergoes diagnostic esophagogastroduodenoscopy with sedation. Once it is determined that there are no contraindications, the intragastric balloon is passed into the gastric chamber with an endoscopic guide. Inflation is done under direct endoscopic vision, and the procedure takes approximately 10 minutes.

Placement is carried out in the endoscopy unit, and it is an outpatient procedure.

Patients who have had previous bariatric surgeries, patients with large hiatal hernias, severe reflux esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal deformities, or ulcers or tumors in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum are contraindicated for intragastric balloon placement.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN I EXPECT TO LOSE?

Weight loss is individual, but it is estimated that weight loss at 6 months after having the balloon is approximately between 12 and 20 kilograms.

HOW LONG SHOULD I KEEP THE INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON IN PLACE?

Intragastric balloons are designed to stay for a year. After this time, they are removed by endoscopy under sedation. Patients who have had the intragastric balloon placed receive support in nutrition and medical care during the year they have it in place. After the balloon is removed, the patient should continue with healthy nutritional habits and physical activity.
